The history of Haarlem dates back to the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, the city was an important center of Dutch art and culture. Well-known painters such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen lived and worked in Haarlem. Many of their works of art can still be admired in the Frans Hals Museum and Teylers Museum.Â
